1. Drink moonshine at Maine Craft Distilling (21+)
Where: Maine Craft Distilling, 101 Fox Street
When: Friday, September 27 at 4:00 pm
Cost: Free
Maine Craft Distilling is releasing their new blueberry moonshine, or Blueshine, this coming Friday at 4 pm. Kick your weekend off by tasting this product that’s made with 100% Maine ingredients while enjoying live bluegrass music from the “Blueshine Band”. This is a great chance to mingle with local business owners and tell all your friends that you spent Friday afternoon drinking moonshine. Even better, the first 100 people wearing blue (jeans don’t count) will receive a free shot glass. Cheers!
2. Vibe out at Mosart212 Presents: Salvaged Juke Joint (21+ to drink & after 9 pm)
Where: Salvage BBQ, 919 Congress St.
When: Friday, September 27 at 9:00 pm
Cost: Free to enter
Mosart Nunez and DJ Gilly From Philly spin vinyl at your new favorite BBQ joint Friday night. Enjoy funk, soul, r & b, blues, and classic rock as you sip local brews and cocktails from Salvage’s fine bar. Come early to get your fill of BBQ then dance off the calories with music that’s sure to make you move.
3. Support Nate Shupe’s battle against cancer with “Shupe’s Ball” (21 +)
Where: The Big Easy, 55 Market St.
When: Saturday, September 28 at 8:00 pm
Cost: $10 at the door
Nate Shupe, aka El Shupacabra, has made his mark on the Portland hip hop scene over the last four years as a DJ, producer, and host of The Big Easy’s weekly Rap Night. Sadly, Nate’s been battling rapidly spreading testicular cancer since last June. 100% of the proceeds will go towards his expensive chemotherapy treatment. Whether rap is your thing or not, this is a great way to show support for someone who’s poured his heart and soul into enriching the Portland music scene. Saiyid hosts as local lyricists prove hip hop is alive and well in Maine. Plus, it’s called “Shupe’s Ball”, which is awesome.
4. Embrace the Fall with Portland Farmers’ Market in Deering Oaks
Where: Deering Oaks Park
When: Saturdays 7:00 am – 1:00 pm
Cost: Free Entrance
The weekly farmers’ market in Deering Oaks is a reminder of how lucky we really are to live in Portland. Listed as one of the top 10 farmers’ markets in the country by Travel & Leisure magazine, quality produce comes to us from hardworking Maine growers and producers. Break out your favorite sweater and sip on apple cider as you shop fall’s best offerings.
5. Broaden your horizons with French Cinema at the Portland Museum of Art
Where: Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square
When: Friday 27th– 6:30pm, Saturday 28th– 2:00 pm, Sunday 29th– 2:00 pm
Cost: $7 at the admissions desk
Vin Diesel’s Riddick not meeting your cinematic needs? Then Pierre Schoeller’s French language, The Minister, is showing all weekend at the Portland Museum of Art. Subtitled in English, the film follows politician Bertrand Saint-Jean as he struggles to resist corruption and remain true to his public servant roots. What a great way to repent for a particularly rowdy weekend of drinking moonshine and dancing late into the evening, by taking in a French matinee come Sunday.
