The George Fletcher West mansion, located at 181 Western Promenade, is a Georgian revival-style home designed by Portland architect Frederick A. Thompson. Built in 1911, it’s Portland’s largest private residence, spanning 12,000 square feet.
George Fletcher West, was a prominent businessman in the early 20th century, who made his wealth from gas and electric utilities investments. Despite causing a stir in Portland, he spent $100,000 of his fortune to build this lavish home.
In the mid-20th century, the large single-family home was turned into six apartments, leading to a decline in its condition, as seen in the throwback photo. The Glickman family took on the restoration project in 1985, bringing the mansion back to its original state.
Recently, in July 2020, the mansion was sold for $2.825 million dollars, marking another chapter in its history.
