If you are a fan of the Old Port, chances are you’ve either walked into Mornings In Paris, or you’re familiar with the Parisian coffee shop, located on Exchange Street. Sadly, their Old Port shop will be closing its doors this month or next. The owner, Isabelle Julien has decided to close her Exchange Street location, instead choosing to focus on her Kennebunk shop. The decision to close is a bittersweet one, and she has nothing but happy memories from the last five years. As the owner, she is in the shop frequently. This means that she knows all of her regulars, and is acquainted with details concerning their daily lives. She has formed personal relationships with her customers, which she will continue to foster, even now.
Mornings in Paris is known for its French flair, brightly colored macarons, and specialty coffees. It’s not unheard of to have a line out the door when people need their coffee fix, and Mornings in Paris has been a great place to grab a drink, or sit down and read a book. Julien is originally from France, and knew when she bought the shop that she wanted to bring a taste of France to the Old Port. Though there are many places to find cupcakes and pastries, French inspired treats are nowhere to be found besides Mornings In Paris.
In the five years that Mornings In Paris has been open, the shop has been a perfect way for Julien to get to know the Old Port. Customers have become friends and a part of her life. A wedding was held outside her storefront window last year. A few loyal fans have even sent handwritten letters to her, expressing their sadness regarding the Exchange Street location closing. Another Portland location could be reopened sometime in the future, but in the meantime, be sure to visit their Kennebunk location! It’s perfect on sunny summer days, with outdoor seating and a beautiful view. Though we are sad to see our favorite coffee shop leave (especially the delicious macarons!), we wish Isabelle and Mornings in Paris the best.
