About 'As We Are'
The inspiration for Sea + Sky stems from the museum’s dynamic exhibition, As We Are. Running from October 11, 2024, to April 27, 2025, the exhibit showcases the work of 14 emerging artists, each with a strong connection to Maine.
Spanning a variety of media—painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, and sculpture—As We Are offers a fresh perspective on contemporary art in the United States. The exhibit invites visitors to explore themes of identity, ecology, material history, and kinship, all while spotlighting the deep sense of community shared among the featured artists.
Many of these artists are rooted in Maine’s artistic traditions, drawing inspiration from icons like Lois Dodd, Marsden Hartley, and John Marin. However, they also challenge and reimagine these legacies, infusing their work with modern subjectivities and innovative approaches. Whether as friends, mentors, or alumni of local institutions, the artists’ connections to one another and to Maine are palpable, creating a cohesive and thought-provoking narrative throughout the exhibit.
