Exchange Street, originally known as Fish Street when it was established in 1724, holds a significant place in history. It was known as a bustling center for printers and newspapers, with the iconic Press Herald Building at its pinnacle. This building, built in 1923 and later expanded in 1948, served as the headquarters for the Portland Press Herald. It was renovated in 2015, which saw its transformation into the Press Hotel.
Prior to the 1970s, Exchange Street and the broader Old Port area had deteriorated, with many sections left abandoned. However, as Portland started to draw more tourists, Exchange Street underwent a remarkable revitalization alongside the entire Old Port district. Today, it remains an integral part of the city, reflecting its history and diverse character.
