Right next to Custom House Wharf, there’s a lot more to see than meets the eye. A throwback to 1980 unveils the story of how things have shifted over time in this lively spot.
Now, Gilbert’s Chowder House sits where Lundgren’s Market used to be, blending a bit of today with a lot of yesterday. The old photo highlights the entrance to Casco Bay Lines under a bright blue sign, a doorway to the past we can’t help but peek through.
Switching gears, Andy’s Old Port Pub has moved into the space that once belonged to Creighton & Sons, a flower wholesaler. Picture flowers being replaced by people sipping drinks – that’s the change that has taken place.
Take a look at the nearby brick building. It used to be the office for Randall & McAllister, but it went through a big shift, becoming the home of Dry Dock Restaurant Tavern. Sadly, that chapter has closed, and the doors won’t reopen.
In both photos, be sure to take note of the renowned neon sign for Boone’s Fish House & Oyster Room, prominently situated on Commercial Street.
Custom House Wharf has seen its fair share of makeovers. Every corner has a story, and with each change, a new part of the tale unfolds. These buildings might not talk, but if you stop to look, you’ll feel the history in the air.
