Long before J’s Oyster opened at 5 Portland Pier, the building was already a popular summer destination, as shown in this 1937 photo. When the restaurant opened in 1977, Commercial Street was a bustling working waterfront rather than the restaurant and hotel district it has become. With a constant stream of hungry and thirsty fishermen, J’s quickly became a favorite—a reputation it still holds today.
